The Renault Avantime concept was unveiled at Geneva Motor Show in 1999. The project, originally known as ‘CoupéSpace’, involved Renault once again joining forces with Matra in an official partnership. Renamed Avantime, the concept borrowed the chassis from Espace III, but instead became a four-seat, three-door coupé.
The Avantime concept was based on new architecture – ‘one-box’ that the Espace had pioneered in the 1980s with all the space and functionality of an MPV, the dynamism of a coupé and the exhilaration of a cabriolet.
The Avantime concept was then revealed as a full production car just six months after the concept at Frankfurt Motor Show. Only minor changes were made to the concept car in order to made it production-ready.
